Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to question specific calls from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
