A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
