Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
